Also, Ashkenazi Jews are likely descended from a people called the Khazars who lived in Eastern Europe and the Ukraine, and who converted to Judaism in the 8th century, though not all of them did. Roughly 50% of the Jews in Israel are Ashkenazi Jews, who have no ancestral ties to Israel. I have Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry on my father side, so technically I'm not a Jew since one's mother has to be Jewish to be a real Jew.
